SMALL PUBLISHERS DO YOUR HOMEWORK Part I

Are small Publishing houses getting a raw deal? Well according to several articles in the publishing arena the answer is NO. The critical eye on Small publishing houses seem to be validated. There are many people that decide to become publishers without doing their homework. They start half -baked companies that put the authors and themselves at risk for a big let down. First things first. Small companies ran by amateurs usually do not use professional contracts. The contract between publisher and author is crucial it protects both parties and is an outline of responsibilities and duties for all involved in the deal. I am author and president of two small Publishing companies Johnson Publications Press Inc. and Metamorphosis Publications(Christian Lit) based in Philly and Tampa FL. During my journey I learned a lot by trial and error; but when I decided to pursue publishing other author's work I did my research. There are plenty of seminars as well as books that teach the basics about publishing as a career.






Owning and operating a small Press has lots of benefits. Small publishers have the luxury of publishing in a niche market, having more creative freedom for each project, being more in tuned with each author and the ability to offer authors a higher royalty. This is due to the absence of the large over head for a massive staff with various projects running at one time.As many benefits that are present there are pitfalls if the publisher is not well read and prepared to be a business owner. Remember the key word is professional. The projects put out at a small press should be no different than those at the larger publishing company. They should be at least industry standard. Smaller publishers need key people to assist in the process too. So please if you are running a small publishing firm or an author considering one be sure to include the following people in your plans. They assist the publisher with the major parts of publishing a book.

Writer’s Check list

1.Topic:Select what you would like to write about. The ideas for your topic should be clear and well defined. Brainstorming is always a great place to start.

2.Research:Gather facts to support your statements or opinions.

3.Format:The requirements for writing a letter, an essay, a speech, or a journal are different. Choose your format and follow its requirements.

4.Purpose:Your purpose will focus your writing. Are you writing to inform, to entertain, to instruct, or to persuade your audience?

5.Audience:Your choice of words and writing style will be shaped by your audience. Are you writing for students, younger children, or adults?

6.Outline:Write your thesis (topic) statement clearly. Then write your sub-topics in a logical order that leads to a conclusion.

7.Point of View:Determine the point of view (ex. I, he/she, etc.) From which you will write. Your understanding of a topic may increase when you consider different points of view.

8.Rough Draft:Write a rough that follows your outline, keeping your audience and point of view in mind. Each paragraph should deal with only one main idea. Your composition should follow a logical order to a conclusion.

9.Edit and Revise:Check your work for spelling and formatting. Revise the content if necessary. Proofread carefully.

10.Sources:DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Give source for all quotes, facts, and ideas that are not your own. Use footnotes and/or a bibliography or "works cited" page.

11.The Final Draft:Prepare a neat, final copy for submission. Be proud of your work!Tip: When you take notes, immediately jot down the title of the work, the author, the publisher, and the date published. This saves time later!

Trapping on the block tonight I had a lot of shit on my mind. Heavy duty shit, like my future and my life. That was the main reason I dipped out so early, it wasn’t because I wasn’t feeling well like I lied and told the big homie….Though I would never admit to myself or others about the fear I had of getting locked up, or killed out here. I did and It was beginning to take a toll on me, and like all gangsta flicks, I knew as soon as shit got to getting too good, some bad shit was bound to happen." I just hoped that if shit dose go down, that I would be lucky enough to be appointed to a cold jail cell versus a casket dropping six feet deep.

I wanna live and truthfully speaking I do wanna get a chance to change my life and get to know God better, one of these days." But with my luck, I’d probably get set up, robbed and killed in the streets first! Then my grandma gone be grieving my lost and blaming herself for my own choices; my god I love that women more than life itself! So I know if not even for me I have to make a change in my life for her, or at least invest in a fucking street team out here. That way I could sit back relax and collect my money. And if shit got to popping off, then at least my hands would be clean and I would save my grandmother the tears…. Yea, that makes a lot of since to me; I’ll be on that shit at the top of the morning!

TO CHEAT OR NOT TO CHEAT?

INFIDELITY Personality or circumstance?
Is Infidelity a blame game. Who is really responsible for cheating? Many believe that people are pushed to cheat, do to a lack of need not being met from their partner. Others will argue that people who participate in unfaithful behavior have a personality defect of some kind and are not capable of empathy for the other person; but instead are narcissist and self serving. Question: Is there ever a reason to cheat?In my book "INSIDE OUT" the lead character is in a situation where she has shared parts of her world with a stranger. She has completely disregarded her reality and began to live in her fantasy 24/7. In the scene below she walks on the wild side not being mindful of the people she may get hurt...The stress of her secret life was killing her. She would cry herself to sleep, at times not knowing which way to go. Adam gave her thug-out love and held nothing back and she liked that. TE` gave her stability and comfort with a sincere love. She was caught in a whirlwind and loving the turbulence. Evea tried to rationalize her indiscretions as she thought to herself, “Shit, men do this shit all the time. They’re just not as good at it”...

EXCERPT INSIDE OUT by Lati`a D. Johnson

Beee…eep! Evea heard a horn coming from behind her as she pulled out of the parking lot of her job. “Who the hell is this all up on my bumper?” In her rear view mirror she could see a champagne colored car with deep tint and rims that reflected the sun rays. She stopped to let the idiot go by and realized that it was Adam in his new 2006 Lexus Coupe. He pulled beside her and rolled down the window. “Going my way, sexy?” he said as he winked at her.“Whe….n did you get this?” “This baby is fresh off the showroom floor. Want to go for a spin?” “Sure, let me park my Jeep.” Evea got in the coupe and her ass melted in the soft supple cream leather seat. She said, “This shit is hot!”Adam took off down the highway. “Where are we going? I have to be home by”… “SHHHHH, I got you! I want to show you something.” Adam took Evea for a long drive to upstate Pennsylvania. The air was crisp and cold as they pulled up to a huge house with horses and other livestock. “Whose house is this?” “I don’t know but I’m hoping to have one like it real soon. You gone be my part- time wife, taking care of shit.” Evea smiled. As silly as it seemed, she liked that idea, even if it was just a dream. Adam and Evea spent at least three hours more together. When they were together, the time seemed to evaporate like steam from a boiling pot of water. Evea lay gently in his arms gazing up at the sky, wondering how she would continue to pull that shit off. Adam interrupted her from her trance;
“What’s up Sunshine? Why you so quiet?”
“I’m just thinking.” Evea responded.
“About what?” Evea thought to her self,
“Should I tell the truth or spin it like I know how to do so well?” I’m thinking about how good it feels lying in your lap and how great it would feel to be riding that big pole right now.” Adam laughed and licked his lips. Evea knew what excited him. He was a true thug, but he liked to be dominated sometimes. Evea could feel his stick rising to its full potential as it throbbed and pressed against the left side of her head. This turned Evea on. She loved stick and loving Adam’s stick is just what she proceeded to do. Evea slowly unzipped his Enyce jeans with her teeth. Adams eyes grew with excitement as she used her mouth as a tool. His pants and underwear were pulled down with no hands in the equation. Evea slowly licked around the head of his strong pleasure rod.
